Queue & scheduling
Job routing
Job routing is the automatic assignment of a queued 3D print job to a specific printer, based on which machines can run the job and which are free, rather than on a human deciding in advance.
Print queue
A print queue is the ordered list of 3D print jobs waiting to run across a group of printers, held as one shared backlog rather than as a separate list on each machine.
Queue discipline
Queue discipline is the rule that determines the order in which waiting jobs are served, such as first-come, first-served or priority-based ordering.
Queue system
A queue system accepts incoming work, holds it in a defined order, and releases each item to a resource that can process it. In 3D printing, the work is a print job and the resource is an eligible printer.

Additive manufacturing
Additive manufacturing is the production of parts by building them up layer by layer from digital models, the industrial term for the family of processes that includes 3D printing.
Lights-out manufacturing
Lights-out manufacturing is production that continues without on-site staff. In additive manufacturing, this usually means printers running unattended overnight or through weekends.
Load balancing
Load balancing in 3D printing operations is the distribution of queued jobs across a fleet so machine time is spread evenly, rather than concentrating work on a subset of printers while others sit idle.
Print farm
A print farm is a group of 3D printers operated together as a single production resource, typically running continuously to fulfil orders or produce parts at volume.
Printer fleet management
Printer fleet management is the practice of operating several 3D printers through one coordinated view of status, job assignment, maintenance, and utilization.
Workflow & governance
Approval workflow
An approval workflow is the review step between submission and printing, in which an operator approves, rejects, or flags a job before any material or machine time is committed to it.
Job intake
Job intake is the structured process by which a 3D print request enters an operation. It validates the file and collects the context needed before the job can queue.
Print job
A print job is a single unit of 3D printing work as tracked by an operations system: a model file plus the metadata, approvals, assignment, and outcome record attached to it.
Slicer
A slicer is software that converts a 3D model into the layer-by-layer toolpath instructions a specific printer executes, applying settings for material, layer height, infill, and supports.
STL file
An STL file describes a 3D model's surface as a mesh of triangles, and is the most widely used interchange format for submitting geometry to a 3D printer.
Metrics & reporting
Cost per part
Cost per part is the fully loaded cost of producing one finished 3D printed component, including material, machine time, failed attempts, and the labour required to start and clear the job.
Cost recovery
Cost recovery is the practice of attributing the material and machine time consumed by each 3D print job back to the user, course, department, or customer responsible for it, so the operation's running costs can be recouped.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
Overall Equipment Effectiveness is a manufacturing metric combining availability, performance, and quality into a single percentage that describes how much of a machine's potential output is actually realised.
Print failure rate
Print failure rate is the share of started 3D print jobs that do not produce a usable part, whether through detachment, extrusion problems, mechanical fault, or operator error.
Throughput
Throughput is the number of completed print jobs or parts an operation produces in a given period. It measures output rather than how busy the fleet appears.
Utilization rate
Utilization rate is the share of available time a 3D printer spends actually printing, expressed as a percentage of the hours it could have been running.
Security & deployment
Air-gapped deployment
An air-gapped deployment runs software entirely on a network with no connection to the public internet, so data cannot leave and external systems cannot reach in.
Audit trail
An audit trail is a timestamped, attributable record of important actions in a 3D printing operation, including submissions, approvals, configuration changes, prints, and failures.
Role-based access control (RBAC)
Role-based access control is a permission model in which access is granted to roles rather than to individuals, so a person's ability to submit, approve, or administer print jobs follows from the role they hold.
Self-hosted deployment
A self-hosted deployment runs the software on infrastructure the customer operates, such as its own servers or private cloud, rather than on infrastructure operated by the vendor.
Single sign-on (SSO)
Single sign-on lets people access a 3D printing platform using their existing organisational identity, so accounts are provisioned, permissioned, and revoked centrally rather than managed separately in the print system.
