What is overall equipment effectiveness (oee)?
Overall Equipment Effectiveness is a manufacturing metric combining availability, performance, and quality into a single percentage that describes how much of a machine's potential output is actually realised.

The formula
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
Applied to a 3D printer:
- Availability: share of scheduled time the machine was able to run (not down, not waiting on material or an operator).
- Performance: actual print speed against the machine’s expected speed for that job.
- Quality: share of completed prints that were usable, without a reprint.
Why it beats utilization alone
A printer can be 95% utilized and still produce very little, if a third of those prints fail. OEE catches that, because the quality term collapses the score. It is the metric that translates a print farm’s performance into language a manufacturing or operations executive already reads.
The 85% “world class” benchmark often quoted for traditional manufacturing isn’t a useful default for additive operations. The processes and failure modes differ, so comparisons need the same definitions and operating context.
