What is a print farm, and what does it need?
A print farm is a group of 3D printers operated as one production resource. Its management software handles the work around the machines: intake, queueing, dispatch, printer state, failures, and the records used to understand output and cost.
The printers are only one part of the cost. Starting jobs, changing material, clearing plates, handling failures, and finding completed parts all take time. A useful cost per part includes that work instead of stopping at filament and estimated print time.

What is print farm management software?
Print farm management software runs the work around a production 3D printing fleet: accepting jobs, holding them in a shared queue, dispatching them to printers, keeping their order or project identifiers, recording outcomes, and reporting on the fleet. It sits above the slicers and printer software already in use.
What actually breaks first as a print farm scales?
It depends on the process. Common constraints are the gap between jobs, failures found too late, material changes, and losing track of which finished part belongs to which request. Measure those before assuming the next purchase should be another printer.
How do I calculate cost per part for 3D printed components?
Fully loaded cost per part includes material, machine time, a share of failed attempts, labour for starting and clearing jobs, depreciation and maintenance, and idle capacity. At a 10% failure rate, every good part carries roughly 11% more material and machine time than the nominal figure. Counting only filament is the most common reason in-house printing looks cheaper on paper than it turns out to be.
