What is printer fleet management?

Printer fleet management is the practice of operating several 3D printers through one coordinated view of status, job assignment, maintenance, and utilization.

Also known as: 3D printer fleet management, fleet management software, printer management

What a fleet needs that a single printer does not

One printer needs a host. A fleet needs an operating picture:

  • State: which machines are printing, idle, held, or down, right now.
  • Assignment: which job each busy machine is running, and for whom.
  • History: what each machine has run, and how often it failed doing it.
  • Maintenance: hours since service, per machine, so preventive work is scheduled rather than reactive.

Mixed fleets are the normal case

Many operations run printer models from several manufacturers. Fleet management software presents supported machines in one queue and dashboard while keeping each job’s printer-model and material requirements explicit.
