What is load balancing?
Load balancing in 3D printing operations is the distribution of queued jobs across a fleet so machine time is spread evenly, rather than concentrating work on a subset of printers while others sit idle.

The symptom it fixes
Unbalanced fleets are easy to spot: a few printers show heavy wear and a permanent backlog while others rarely run. The cause is often ordinary habit. Operators choose the reliable machine, the one nearest the desk, or the one whose quirks they already know.
The cost is compound. Overworked machines fail more often, which reduces available capacity, which pushes even more work onto the remaining known-good printers.
What load balancing has to account for
Even distribution has to respect eligibility. A job that requires a specific material or build volume cannot be balanced onto a machine that cannot run it. Practical load balancing distributes work within each pool of interchangeable machines, and reports on pools that are structurally over-subscribed so the fleet can be expanded where it actually binds.
